Aztecs Undefeated on the Blue Turf

A lot of teams have been intimidated or confused by Boise State’s blue turf, but not the Aztecs. They have played on it twice, both times as underdogs, and they have won both games. The first was a 21-19 upset of the heavily favored Broncos in 2012; and last year in the Potato Bowl, upsetting Buffalo, 49-24.

The series with Boise only dates back to 2011, a game the Aztecs lost, 52-35. But the Aztecs lead 2-1, thanks to last year’s 34-31 OT win at home. With a new coach in command, the Broncos seem to have regained some of their swagger. They are 7-2, having lost only to Ole Miss (no disgrace) and to Air Force (a surprise). With a powerful offense, they average about 38 points a game.

Their game last week was a puzzler. They gave up 28 points in the first quarter to New Mexico, before rallying at the end to win, 60-49. They gave up a bunch of long TD plays, so let’s hope the Aztecs turn it loose.

The weather will be cold – 15 degrees at kick-off is forecast. But that’s probably more of a concern to me than it is to Rocky and the players! And through the years SDSU has an unblemished record of playing well and winning in snowy conditions.

GO AZTECS!
