First, a big tip of the hat to QB Quinn Kaehler. Playing through soreness in his throwing arm shoulder and without the benefit of full practice during the week, he had one of his best games ever. Completed 14 of 22 passes. That’s 64%. Totaled 249 yards. Three TDs of 24, 58 and 28 yards. And NO interceptions.
A budding star, Sophomore WR Eric Judge caught 4 passes, including a 58-yard TD where he displayed his blazing speed, bursting between two defenders. Ezell showed he’s bounced back strongly from his broken collarbone by catching four passes, two for TDs. Equally important is his leadership and the fact that his presence opens up other receivers. And, no surprise, DJ Pumphrey ran for 142 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, some good halftime adjustments made a big difference in the game. After giving up 155 yards rushing in the first half, the defense held Idaho to only 38 net yards in the second half. Gutsy play by Alex Barrett and Sam Meredith, two DLs who came out of the game with painful injuries but went back in to contribute to the win. And it was good to see Jake Fely back to his energetic best.
Now the Aztecs go to Boise State for a crucial MW game. One thing you know, Boise has an explosive offense, as witness last night’s 60-49 come-from-behind over New Mexico. But maybe they are vulnerable. They gave up two 75-yard TD runs, one 49-yard TD run and a 100-yard kick-off return. (Don’t forget, the Aztecs are 2-0 on that blue turf!)
